| Why text mode is better
|
So why would you want to use an old style text mode program when those GUI file managers look so much
prettier with their icons, tool bars, drag & drop etc? Well, here are a number of good reasons:
- Faster, especially in full screen mode.
- Ideal for users who use command line utilities as they can be run in the same session with File Commander.
GUI file managers must create a text mode session every time you run a command.
- Lower resource requirements. Even on my 486DX2-66 File Commander usually starts in less than a second.
- Not mouse dependent. I've yet to see a GUI file manager that lets you do everything without having to reach for the mouse.
- Can be run in an emergency boot. This means you don't have to be stuck with just a command line when you
boot from floppies or the recovery menu (OS/2 only).
- Can be run in a telnet session on an OS/2 or NT server for remote maintenance.
